This week is mainly lectures about the mideast and southwest asia situations. All of us will be learning some of the local language; for our team, Dari-the Afghan dialect of Farsi aka Persian. It is one of two dominant and official languages in A-stan, the other is Pashto. Most of the officials and officers in A-stan speak some English.
We also spent a day of didactics on avoiding capture and getting recovered if we are isolated/missing/detained/captures (IMDC in Armyspeak). Considering we will not leave our compound, we expect to never employ these lessons.
We will be assisting/mentoring at a brand new, nicely equipped hospital in Herat inside of the Afghan National Army base there. Our berthing will be within the compound and walking distance to the hospital. Our team includes an ICU nurse, anesthesiologist, oral surgeon, pharmacist, lab techs, medical corpsmen, etc. So, we will try to help in every aspect of health care delivery. Very exciting!
Our team gets to use 4 Humvees while we are at Fort Riley; one will have a 50 cal gun mounted which makes a lot of noise even with blanks! We will get convoy practice but, again, are unlikely ever to convoy there. We will fly to our destination.
