Feeding Frenzy

One of our medical corpsman has contacted various websites that support the military. As a result, we get boxes of goodies at least weekly. He brings these to our team meetings so we can pick out treats and useful toiletries. We recently received surplus Halloween candy and Girl Scout cookies, more than would be healthy. I brought a bunch to morning report at the hospital since they love getting anything from the US, even cheap pens provided by the pharmaceutical representatives. I gave it to the Deputy Director of the hospital who was leading the meeting and he "distributed" it after the meeting. Cookies were put out on dishes and grabbed 4 at a time. Candies were picked over quickly. Shown is several staff members, docs and nurses alike, going after the remains. They are very appreciative and thank us and those at home for brightening their day.

Hi. I think you have an interesting job there. I would have joined an international NGO there if not for the pleas of my mother. I will surely come back to read your back posts!

ZJ, western Afghanistan is pretty peaceful. My work with the hospital keeps me on base so very little risk. The needs here are quite extreme so it's a good mission.

I think what you are doing there, helping the Afghani people, is truly great! My parents watch the news all the time, and more often than not, the news paints a very different, if not misleading, images of Afghanistan that also misleads most of its viewers. Perhaps a little more convincing job with my parents would do.
If you don't mind, I'd like to link your blog to mine. I would love to read more stories of your mission there! Thanks!

Go ahead and link, my pleasure. "Winning the hearts" is the second highest priority, after helping with securing peace. The best way to defeat the insurgents is to gain the support of the populace. Indeed, an elder from a village where we provided healthcare notified the authorities of some bad guys and prevented a bad situation. Women's rights have improved enormously from the Taliban days; women hold senior government positions and are doctors in army hospitals. This would have been unthinkable 6 years ago.
